The Kansas City Chiefs are entering the 2026 offseason facing a degree of uncertainty they haven’t experienced in a decade.
Following a rare 6-11 campaign that saw the franchise miss the postseason for the first time since 2014, the focus has shifted entirely to the health of Patrick Mahomes.
The three-time Super Bowl champion is currently rehabilitating after tearing both the ACL and LCL in his left knee during a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
While Mahomes was recently spotted walking without a visible limp at the Big 12 men’s basketball tournament in Kansas City, the nine-month recovery timeline for such an injury leaves the team with a significant vacancy at the top of the depth chart for the start of the 2026 season.
Compounding the concern is a depleted quarterback room. Gardner Minshew, who started the final games of 2025, has since departed for the Arizona Cardinals on an $8.25 million deal, leaving the Chiefs without an experienced contingency plan.
This vacuum has led the front office to explore the veteran market, with Super Bowl XLVIII winner Russell Wilson emerging as a primary target.
According to league reports circulated by Complex, the possibility of Wilson joining the Chiefs has gained significant traction as a “development that has begun circulating across league conversations.”
For Kansas City, Wilson represents a bridge starter who could steer the offense until Mahomes is cleared for full contact.

After a 10-year legendary stint in Seattle and a tumultuous two seasons in Denver, Wilson spent 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers before landing with the New York Giants in 2025.
His time in East Rutherford began as the designated starter, but the 37-year-old was eventually sidelined in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart, who took over the reins in Week 11.
Wilson finished his 2025 campaign with modest statistics, but his extensive postseason experience remains a draw for a Chiefs team desperate to return to its winning ways.
If the Chiefs finalize a deal with Wilson, he would serve as a “stopgap” solution, allowing the coaching staff to avoid rushing Mahomes back before his knee is fully stable.
