Few things are more thrilling in baseball than a rookie getting the call to the big leagues. It’s the result of years of hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering belief. And when that moment comes, the emotion is raw.
On Monday, the Kansas City Royals delivered a movie-like moment when they told their top prospect, Jac Caglianone, that his time had come.
The big reveal
What started as a routine conversation turned into a life-changing moment when Omaha Storm Chasers manager Mike Jirschele asked the 22-year-old, “Want to hop on the charter to St. Louis?” Caglianone’s reaction was instant: “I need to call my dad,” he said, still in disbelief.
What looked like just another day quickly became one he’ll never forget. Overcome with emotion, he hugged his manager and called home. It wasn’t just his dream-it was his family’s too.
Numbers that speak volumes
Despite having played just 50 games this season and logging only 355 plate appearances since going pro, Caglianone has been a force at the plate: a .322 average, .389 OBP, .593 slugging percentage, 15 home runs, and 56 RBIs.
That kind of power is exactly why the Royals took him sixth overall in last summer’s draft. And it’s already turning heads-including that of team co-owner Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes joins the hype
The NFL superstar and Chiefs quarterback reacted on X with a meme of Michael Scott from The Office shouting, “Oh my God, OK, it’s happening!” Mahomes’ excitement only amplified the buzz around the young slugger.
And he’s not the only one. MLB insider Jeff Passan didn’t hold back: “Caglianone has the kind of power you see in Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani.” That’s the level of talent we’re talking about.
A team in need of firepower
Kansas City desperately needs more juice in its lineup. Despite a solid 31-29 record, the offense has struggled to keep pace. The team is hitting just .247 (14th in MLB), with a .300 OBP and .359 slugging percentage.
The most alarming stat? They’re tied for 28th in runs scored (194). The Royals are looking for a spark-and Caglianone might be just what they need.
Could he be the next big thing?
Caglianone’s left-handed power could be a game-changer for the Royals. If he can bring even a portion of his minor league production to the majors, he could become the new face of Kansas City’s offense.
Who knows? We might soon see him go toe-to-toe with Ohtani and Judge in the Home Run Derby. For now, Royals fans have every reason to be excited-and Mahomes is leading the cheer.
