Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany have just welcomed their third child — and second daughter — in what has been a whirlwind week for the Kansas City Chiefs superstar and his spouse.

It was important to Patrick to secure the #1 overall seed in the AFC playoffs so that his Chiefs would not have to play on wild-card weekend, knowing that Brittany’s due date was imminent. But Patrick will soon have to turn his attention back to the gridiron when his heartstrings are being tugged on the homestead.

Nothing changes for Mahomes and Chiefs coaches

Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy sees Mahomes‘ life a little differently. As Kansas City prepares for a divisional round showdown with the Houston Texans, Nagy is eager to see Mahomes maintain the “balance” he found after a rocky start to the regular season.

Don’t change anything. Just keep it going. It’s working pretty good,” Nagy told reporters. “He’s got to stay in his habit of how he does things, what he looks at, and then again, for him to like, not do too much. Don’t start because what happens is you start chasing ghosts. You see so much that you end up maybe sometimes talking yourself out of something that’s pretty good.”

Mahomes and the Chiefs offense have played “clean” football in recent weeks, timed with the approach of the playoffs. The Chiefs’ last offensive turnover took place in Week 11, when Kansas City lost in Buffalo; Mahomes threw an interception in garbage time, with the result already beyond doubt. The superstar quarterback did not play in the Week 18 blowout loss to the Denver Broncos; he ended the season with 26 touchdown passes against 11 interceptions.

But it’s easy to wonder how much Mahomes will be affected by rest — or rust. His last meaningful pass came on Christmas Day, in a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Texans‘ pass rush dominated in Houston‘s wild-card win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Kansas City’s offensive line will have to stand tall and give Mahomes just enough time to go through his progressions — otherwise, the two-time MVP could be home spending time with Golden Raye much earlier than expected.
