Patrick Mahomes made it clear after the Chiefs‘ 32-29 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game: he feels for Josh Allen. The Chiefs‘ star quarterback has now sent Allen home in the playoffs four times since January 2021, and the defeat was personal.

Following the game, Mahomes spoke to The Athletic, revealing his admiration for Allen despite the competition. “I always feel for him – he’s a great player, an amazing competitor, and an awesome dude who I respect so much,” Mahomes said. “I’m sorry it had to be us. But, you know, we compete, and someone has to win.”

Mahomes expresses respect for Allen’s competitive spirit

The win secured Kansas City’s third consecutive AFC title, and the team is now on the brink of a historic three-peat in the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, Allen sat in the Bills‘ locker room, visibly disappointed, after yet another playoff loss to the Chiefs.

Allen’s performance and missed opportunity

Despite the loss, Allen had a strong performance during the game, completing 18 of 26 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns. He also contributed with 39 rushing yards on 11 carries. But the game came down to a missed opportunity: with less than four minutes remaining, Allen threw a potential game-saving pass to tight end Dalton Kincaid, only for Kincaid to drop it on fourth-and-5.

“We had a chance to break the streak,” Allen said after the game. “At one point, the game was tied at 29. But we couldn’t capitalize when it mattered.”

Mahomes leads Chiefs to another victory

On the other hand, Mahomes led the Chiefs with poise, guiding them through the final moments of the game. The Bills‘ defense couldn’t stop him on Kansas City’s last drive, ultimately allowing Mahomes to seal the victory and send the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl in a row.

While the Bills‘ season ends in heartbreak once again, Mahomes‘ message to Allen shows the respect that the two quarterbacks share. Mahomes will now have another chance to secure his legacy with a Super Bowl win, as the Chiefs prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles in a rematch of Super Bowl 2023.

With the Chiefs and Eagles set to meet on February 9 in New Orleans, Mahomes’ heart might be heavy, but his focus remains on winning a third consecutive title.
