There have been a great number of elite quarterbacks to grace the gridiron since the NFL started becoming more of a pass-happy league at the turn of the millennium. Peyton Manning and Tom Brady stood head and shoulders above them all, until Aaron Rodgers came along.
With others like Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers, the NFL was in outstanding hands at the quarterback position for a long time. But once those players started retiring, the league suffered from a drop-off in quarterback play. Thankfully, Patrick Mahomes – plus Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow – showed up to save the day, quickly launching himself on a Hall of Fame trajectory.
Mahomes is still playing at a very high level at 30 years old, but he hasn’t had the immense, stat-heavy seasons that he did earlier in his career. The most concerning trend has been his touchdown rate falling off sharply. His interception percentage hasn’t necessarily been any worse over the past three seasons, but since he isn’t scoring as many points, his touchdown to interception ratio has been suffering.
Aaron Rodgers’ touchdown to interception ratio is insane
That ratio is an area where Rodgers really stands out; and not just prime Rodgers. The NFL on DAZN social media account unearthed a shocking stat this week: Since 2020, Mahomes has a better touchdown to interception ratio than Brady, but Rodgers more than doubles both up.
Rodgers has long been one of the most accurate throwers of the football in the sport. His ability to keep the ball out of harm’s way has been particularly stunning: Rodgers went 11 straight seasons without throwing more than eight interceptions from 2011 to 2021.
While that hasn’t always translated to postseason success, it’s an area of Mahomes’ game that could be improved. Mahomes has thrown double-digit interceptions in each of his past five seasons. Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid would probably love for that number to come down into single digits.
