Heading into the 2025 NFL season, everyone is assuming that the Kansas City Chiefs will bounce back in a big way. Their 2024 season was far from a disappointment, with the team making a fifth Super Bowl in the past seven seasons under the watchful eyes of Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid. But their standard of greatness means it’s Super Bowl win or bust for the franchise.
That standard is not uncommon with dynasties in the NFL. In particular, the team to do it before the Chiefs was the New England Patriots. With Bill Belichick and Tom Brady leading the way, they turned the franchise into football royalty. And they handed Mahomes one of only two AFC Championship game losses in his career. There wasn’t a huge rivalry between Mahomes and Brady during their playing days due to the latter heading to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers later in his career, but the respect was always present.
Tom Brady has been giving Patrick Mahomes advice all offseason
That much was made clear recently, when Mahomes revealed that he’s been in constant contact with Brady this offseason. While one would expect Brady to be a sounding board for Mahomes, it’s actually been the opposite: it sounds like Brady is seeking the Chiefs QB out himself to give him advice.
“And having Tom, a guy like that say that, just motivates me even more. I’ve actually talked to Tom a good amount this offseason. It’s cool that he wants to give me advice. He doesn’t have to be like that. He’s such a good dude. And I have so much respect for him, and I’ll take any advice he gives me.“
Mahomes didn’t want to reveal too much about Brady’s advice, but the main theme was “being yourself“, particularly when it comes to interacting with teammates. That was one of the biggest reasons why Brady’s Patriots and Buccaneers teammates respected him so much.
Mahomes likely doesn’t have to change much in terms of his personality for his Chiefs teammates to respond to him. He’s proven to be an outstanding leader. But it doesn’t hurt to take some of the GOAT’s advice heading into an age 30 season.
