As Pat McAfee celebrated turning 38 last week, the sports personality and his wife, Samantha McAfee, found themselves in a deeply emotional space, honoring both personal loss and the joyful milestone of their daughter’s second birthday.
Widely known for his bold takes on ESPN and his unpredictable WWE moments, McAfee is also navigating a private chapter filled with heartbreak and healing.
Samantha McAfee reflects on a year of grief
The couple’s daughter, Mackenzie Lynn McAfee, turned two on May 4, marking the occasion with a space-themed birthday party full of laughs, playdates, and heartwarming memories.
But while sharing those joyful moments, Samantha also offered a candid look into the difficult year they’ve endured.
In an emotional Instagram post, Samantha revealed the couple suffered a miscarriage last year, news previously unknown to fans.
“We lost another child this year, which was gut wrenching for us,” she wrote.
“I know it’s personal, but the past year has been a difficult one. We lost a very close family member and he has lost some close friends and teammates.”
Despite their grief, Samantha praised her husband for remaining steadfast amid adversity.
“He still deals with everyday life issues and shows up every single day for his many careers without skipping a beat,” she wrote, adding that Pat has balanced a demanding work schedule, often without rest, while being a dedicated father.
“He tries to make his business trips within a day so he can be home for his daughter in the mornings… he has a deep passion to be a present girl dad.”
As they celebrated Mackenzie’s birthday, Samantha reflected on the day their daughter arrived two weeks early.
“It was 2 years ago today when I woke up Patrick in the most nonchalant way, whispering, ‘I think my water just broke,'” she recalled.
“Since that day, our hearts have been stolen… HAPPY BIRTHDAY MACKENZIE, your parents love the hell out of you.”
Videos from the party showed Pat fully immersed in dad mode, donning a space helmet and playing astronaut inside NASA tents, all at Mackenzie’s request.
“Things you do because your daughter says so,” Samantha captioned a clip.
Even amid loss, the McAfees continue to find light in the moments that matter.
