Carolina Panthers linebacker DJ Johnson will miss the team’s season finale after being involved in a car accident on Rama Road in south Charlotte earlier this week. The accident left Johnson with a concussion, prompting the team to place him on the reserve/non-football injury list.

Head coach Dave Canales confirmed the incident during a press conference on Friday, explaining that Johnson’s injuries are not life-threatening. “We’ve gathered information over the last night and morning,” Canales said. “He’s under evaluation right now, and that’s pretty much all I know at this point.” Emergency medical transport was not required at the scene.

Johnson’ impact this season

Johnson, a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, had increased his role in the Panthers‘ defense this year. Appearing in 14 games with two starts, he recorded 44 tackles, three tackles for loss, and half a sack. His defensive snap count rose from 29% in 2023 to 40% in 2024, highlighting his growing importance on the field.

Teammates have praised Johnson’s physicality and ability to stop the run. “He’s definitely one of the best edge setters we have,” linebacker Jadeveon Clowney said during training camp. “DJ brings the physicality needed to succeed in this league.”

Panthers endure another tough season

The Panthers, currently 4-12, are set to close another disappointing campaign. Carolina has struggled offensively and defensively throughout the season, leading to speculation about potential roster changes and a high draft pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Johnson’s injury is the latest in a series of setbacks for the team. Earlier this year, backup quarterback Andy Dalton and his family were also involved in a car accident. Although no serious injuries occurred, Dalton missed the following game due to a sprained thumb.

As the Panthers prepare for their final matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, the team will need to rely on its remaining depth. Carolina previously fell to Atlanta 38-20 in Week 6, and with Johnson sidelined, they’ll face an uphill battle in ending their season on a high note.
