While Paige Bueckers may not have entered the WNBA with as much hype as Caitlin Clark did one year prior, she was still considered an elite prospect who had the potential to completely turn around a franchise. That has proven difficuly in her first season, as the Dallas Wings are 5-13, but Bueckers has been filling up stat sheets and is well on her way to being named the Rookie of the Year.

In a way, she’s following Clark’s footsteps almost stride for stride. Last season’s Rookie of the Year, Clark also made WNBA All-Star Game history, joining a list of nine players in league history to be named a starter for the game. Now, Bueckers can say that she will be on that list.

Bueckers received a call from Wings general manager Curt Miller, who broke the news to her. Given that she had a camera on her, Bueckers knew what was up most likely, but she may not have realized she was about to get the news that she will be a starter in the All-Star Game.

Bueckers was almost speechless, responding with “wow” and thanking and appreciating Miller for his kind words.

Bueckers joins a list of only a select few other rookies who have started the WNBA All-Star Game. Clark did it last year, but before her were Aliyah Boston, Shoni Schimmel, Elena Delle Donne, Brittney Griner, Maya Moore, Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings and Chamique Holdsclaw.
