Los Angeles Dodgers continue to bolster their roster in the midst of a 2025 season marked by multiple injuries, especially to their pitching staff.
That is why they have added 33-year-old Dominican pitcher Jose Urena, with more than a decade of experience in the major leagues, who will be a teammate of Shohei Ohtani and a key reinforcement for the injury-hit Dodgers.
Urena arrives from free agency, after he decided not to renew with the Toronto Blue Jays where he performed well, although not enough to prevent the Canadian team from looking for a younger reinforcement, leaving Urena available to seek new directions.
The Dodgers, given the physical problems that have affected the group of pitchers led by Dave Roberts, decided to bring in Urena from Tuesday, June 3, and after signing a major league contract will be activated for the second game of the series against the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium.
Jose Ureña statistics
Ureña, Ureña began the 2025 season with the Mets, although his stint with the team was brief, as he made only one relief appearance, allowing five earned runs in three innings, which led to his early departure from the team.
His performance improved considerably in Toronto, both as a long reliever and in occasional starts, achieving an ERA of 3.65 in 12.1 innings. However, his improvement was not enough to consolidate him in the Blue Jays’ bullpen and he was again released, a move that was quickly taken advantage of by the Dodgers.
Overall, Urena has a 5.87 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 15.1 innings pitched, allowing 10 earned runs, walking four and striking out eight.
Where has Jose Ureña played?
With his arrival at the Dodgers, Ureña will wear his eighth uniform in 11 seasons in Major League Baseball. He made his debut in 2015 with the Miami Marlins, where he remained until 2020, and since then has had brief spells with various franchises such as the Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox, and Texas Rangers, as well as the Mets and Blue Jays.
However, he has not managed to establish himself definitively with any of them. Now with the Dodgers, he will seek to establish himself in a star-studded lineup alongside the likes of Ohtani, Yamamoto and Clayton Kershaw.
