The heavyweight division in boxing is in a precarious place. Legends of the sport who dominated for over a decade are on their last legs, with retirement here or coming soon for the likes of Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua. Veterans like Daniel Dubois, Joseph Parker and Agit Kabayel want to take Usyk’s throne once he retires, while promising young talents like Moses Itauma are next up.
Usyk has cleaned up in the division in recent years, taking down Fury and Joshua twice, and he’s looking to do the same against Dubois in one month. With Usyk and Dubois fighting for all of the titles, it has left Fury and Joshua with few options. Fury has technically retired, but no one actually believes he will stay that way. Everything has pointed to a Fury fight against Joshua happening soon.
Former world champion George Groves is among those who believes a bout between the two will happen. He especially believes that now that Dillian Whyte has decided to fight against Itauma, which leaves Joshua with only one real option: Fury.
Tyson Fury is retired, but money and glory talks
If I was either guy, I’d just fight each other and that’s it. I wouldn’t bother with any other fights. I’m sure the money’s great and that but who’s going to be paying through the nose for either guy to not fight each other? There must be a number that makes it worthwhile for both guys. Maybe they’re just waiting for that number.
Of course, Fury would have to come out of retirement for the bout to happen, but that shouldn’t be much of a problem. Fury has “retired” a few times already throughout his career, and has come back each time. If the money is right, Fury will be in the ring alongside Joshua.
Fury hasn’t stopped training one bit since losing to Usyk in December. In fact, he might be in the best shape of his life. With Joshua out of big name alternatives, Fury seems to be the one and only option. It only seems to be a matter of time before it materializes.
