The Philadelphia Eagles are being floated as a top landing spot for Myles Garrett after the Cleveland Browns’ star defensive end made his trade request public.
While the Browns have stated they have no intention of moving on from their franchise cornerstone, the situation appears to be heading toward a potential standoff.
Myles Garrett, Philly’s next defensive star?
The Eagles, fresh off their Super Bowl LIX victory, have reportedly shown “real” interest in Garrett, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
The 2023 Defensive Player of the Year would immediately bolster Philadelphia’s defensive front, which took a hit this offseason with the departure of Haason Reddick.
Garrett has fueled speculation himself, acknowledging the possibility of playing for the Eagles.
“Everybody would love to play for Philly. Down the line, you never know. Maybe I play for Philly,” he said, leaving the door open for a move to the reigning champs.
The 28-year-old pass rusher is coming off another dominant season, tallying 14 sacks and 47 tackles while maintaining his reputation as one of the most disruptive forces in the league.
The Eagles, who had one of the top-ranked defenses last season, could use a player of his caliber, especially with key departures and question marks along the defensive line.
Eagles’ biggest obstacle in signing Garrett
One of the biggest hurdles for Philadelphia is Garrett’s contract.
He still has two years remaining on his deal, worth around $20 million per season, and is reportedly seeking an extension that could reset the market for pass rushers.
The Eagles currently have a very limited cap space, estimated at around $22 million, and would need to make significant financial moves to accommodate Garrett’s salary.
General manager Howie Roseman has a track record of pulling off big trades, acquiring stars like A.J. Brown and Jason Peters in the past.
An anonymous NFL GM told Russini, “Garrett could be this year’s Saquon Barkley,” implying that Roseman is prepared to make another aggressive move.
On the other side of the table, despite Garrett’s trade request, Browns GM Andrew Berry has remained firm on the team’s stance.
“We don’t have an interest in trading Myles,” Berry said, emphasizing the defensive end’s importance to the franchise.
However, in the NFL, loyalty often takes a backseat to opportunity, and a tempting offer-possibly a first-round pick-could force Cleveland to reconsider.
If the Browns ultimately decide to honor Garrett’s request, the Eagles are expected to be among the top teams vying for his services.
Given Philadelphia’s aggressive approach to roster building, the idea of Garrett suiting up in midnight green remains a very real possibility.
