Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul earned a mind-blowing $17.8m million dollars on Friday, November 15 as the pair absolutely smashed the Texas record set by Mexico’s Canelo Alvarez when he took on the United Kingdom’s Billy Joe Saunders in 2021.
The AT&T Stadium was packed out by over 70,000 people and went on to generate the $17.8m from ticket sales alone, according to Most Valuable Promotions, as fans turned out en masse to watch the fight at the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.
The gate also surpassed that of Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor in 2017, but falls short of the all-time record of $72m, which was set when Money Mayweather took on Manny Pacquiao in 2015.
“Paul vs. Tyson gate has surpassed $17.8 million,” MVP said in a statement. “Nearly double the previous Texas gate record for combat sports in both boxing and MMA, obliterating Canelo‘s record of $9 million.
“Paul vs. Tyson’s gate is also higher than any non-Las Vegas UFC gate in history, other than McGregor vs Alvarez in NYC per public records”
Paul celebrates the fight’s success
Paul went on to win the fight via unanimous decision as his youth made the definitive difference against the 58-year-old Tyson, who he is almost 30 years younger than. The Problem Child controlled the tempo with his jab and eventually took home an 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73 win.
Described as “drab” and previously slammed as farcical anyway due to the age disparity and adjusted rules such as 14oz gloves, eight rounds and each round limited to two minutes a piece, fans still turned in to the Netflix fight as Paul celebrated the event.
“Biggest live gate in US boxing history,” Paul told reporters of the attendance. “Outside Las Vegas.
“Numbers don’t lie. People want to see this and that’s an amazing accomplishment.”
