Victories over the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have potentially saved Mike McCarthy’s job with the Dallas Cowboys after he came under pressure following a 3-7 start to the 2024/25 NFL season.

The 61-year-old, who is a one-time Super Bowl champion, was unable to stop the slump at the AT&T Stadium as his side slipped firmly out of contention in the NFC East behind the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders.

As a result he came firmly under the cosh from Cowboys’ former personalities, although he did retain the backing of Jerry Jones, the franchise owner, with Deion Sanders being linked to the post.

But a run of four wins in five games since Week 11 seems to have transformed the outlook in the Lone Star State and brought McCarthy some extra time to finally figure out how to get Prescott, Ceedee Lamb and Micah Persons firing on all cylinders in 2025.

“They weren’t winning, they seemed lost,” Diana Russini, of The Athletic, told Colin Cowherd. “And now they’re surging, and their offense is clicking.

“So, why are you going to move on to a guy who’s won this many games for you? Perhaps maybe not in the big dance, but he’s got all the right things.”

Who do the Cowboys play next?

Since the 34-10 defeat to the Houston Texans on November 18, the Cowboys have rebounded with wins against the Commanders, New York Giants, Panthers and Buccaneers. Their only loss in that time was a 27-20 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

They have scored 137 points in that time, despite the absence of Prescott as the team rotates between Trey Lance and Cooper Rush as stand-ins and although they are out of NFL Playoffs contention they can end the season with a positive record.

Next up are the Eagles, as McCarthy and his side head to the Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, December 29. The game will kick-off at 13:00 ET/10:00 PT.
