The surprising and controversial fall to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft of Shedeur Sanders continues to be the talk of the town and continues to baffle the sports world.

The former Colorado Buffaloes QB had to wait until the third day of the Draft and was selected as the 144th pick by Cleveland Browns. This has stunned an NFL Hall of Famer.

Michael Irvin, the Dallas Cowboys legend who led the franchise to 3 Super Bowls, made an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show” and told Suzy Shuster his thoughts on the late pick of the former Colorado quarterback.

“I have never seen anyone that has had his kind of success in college. put up the kind of numbers that he put up in college, and dropped to the fifth round. You want to tell me he’s not a first-rounder? That’s a thin line. I absolutely believe he’s a first-rounder,” said The Playmaker.

After these words, Irvin made reference to one of Sanders’ “weaknesses” that, according to some fans, “he doesn’t have a strong arm and he doesn’t run fast”, but he cleared all criticism by comparing them with two references: “Eli Manning didn’t have the strongest arm and didn’t run real fast and he was the first pick in the [2004] draft. And the GOAT of all GOATS, god knows he doesn’t have the strongest arm. And god really knows he can’t run at all! That’s Tom Brady,” he argued.

Finally, Michael Irving admitted that while physical abilities are not something to be taken lightly, “the ability to play in key moments of the game” is critical: “And that’s playing football shoulders up and that’s what I saw with Shedeur all the years of watching him.”

Shedeur’s challenge with Browns

With Deshaun Watson – the 2024 starter – recovering from his Achilles injury, Browns will have a tough decision to make on who will fill the starting quarterback job.

Shedeur Sanders is joined by third-round draft pick Dillon Gabriel and veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, who were already with the team.

And although Sanders has shown great results, the Browns, for the moment, do not have a clear starter.
