The Dallas Cowboys have not given their fans much to celebrate in the past year. The effects of a heavy wild-card round playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers carried over from 2023 into 2024, as Dallas missed the playoffs entirely off the back of a disappointing, injury-wracked campaign in which several key contributors missed extended time or were otherwise physically hampered.
Not even star pass rusher Micah Parsons was spared from the injury bug that contributed to the Cowboys‘ 7-10 record. Parsons missed several games in 2024 with a high ankle sprain, ans the Dallas defense regressed into one of the NFL‘s worst units. In order to prevent that from happening again, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has come under pressure to extend Parsons’ contract — which ends after the 2025 season.
Parsons and the Cowboys make a “trade”
According to Mike Fisher of Cowboys Country, Parsons and the Cowboys have started talking extension, as Parsons’ agent and the team have floated early proposals back and forth. It is the start of a process that could lead to the greatest jubilation in Dallas…or the most bitter of tears, if the Cowboys cannot reach an agreement to keep Parsons in blue and white.
Fisher believes this is a “significant” development, and an indication that the Cowboys are invested in keeping their All-Pro edge rusher in the Metroplex for years to come. It seems as if extension talks have moved past the so-called “preliminary” stage to the point where the sides are actively exchanging numbers — and soon, we may see how close Parsons gets to the Cleveland Browns‘ superstar edge rusher Myles Garrett, whose $40 million per year contract is now the richest for a non-quarterback in the NFL.
Parsons understands his worth, and his value to the Cowboys as one of their few homegrown first-round talents. Statistically, Parsons is the most consistent pass rusher in the NFL, putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks at a rate higher than Garrett, Nick Bosa, Trey Hendrickson, and Aidan Hutchinson. He knows that now is his time to cash in — and he wants to do it in Dallas, to continue thrilling Cowboys fans in the seasons ahead.
