Brian Schottenheimer has emerged as a surprising frontrunner in the Dallas Cowboys’ search for their next head coach, a development that has left many fans and insiders stunned. Currently serving as the team’s offensive coordinator, Schottenheimer’s potential promotion has sparked both support and criticism within the Cowboys community. Linebacker Micah Parsons’ brother, Terrence Parsons Jr., has been particularly vocal in expressing his disapproval of this move.
The Cowboys have reportedly scheduled an interview with Schottenheimer for the head coaching position. The 51-year-old joined the team in 2022 and has been the offensive coordinator for the past two seasons under Mike McCarthy.

Previously, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was seen as a favorite for the role, especially after Deion Sanders declined to leave Colorado. However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones surprised everyone by shifting focus to Schottenheimer, emphasizing continuity for the offense as a key factor.
Can Schottenheimer lead the Cowboys to success?
While the Cowboys’ offense struggled this year, ranking No. 23 in Pro Football Network’s Offense+ metric, their performance in 2023 was exceptional, leading the league in scoring. Given that Dallas made Dak Prescott the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history in 2024, maintaining stability on offense seems to be a priority.
Interestingly, Schottenheimer has found support from at least one player on the team. During the “DLLS Cowboys” podcast, longtime Cowboys insider Clarence Hill Jr. shared a text message from a player who appeared to back Schottenheimer’s promotion. Hill hinted that this player might be “No. 4,” potentially referring to quarterback Dak Prescott, though he did not confirm it outright. The text read, “He’ll (Schottenheimer) be ready for the next step. He has the right personality and brain.”
Prescott’s reported approval could carry significant weight in Jerry Jones’ decision-making process. With McCarthy’s departure on the horizon, Schottenheimer’s familiarity with the team and his perceived readiness for leadership may give him an edge in securing the head coaching role.
