The days go by and the relationship between Pete Alonso and the New York Mets has not changed, and while the first baseman has not defined his immediate future in Major League Baseball, the team has also not found his potential replacement.

Although there are several free agents on the market, the options are slowly dwindling, and the same goes for Alonso, so it’s time to reach an agreement, and if not, it’s time for the Queens team to define their new first baseman.

A report indicated that the Mets offered Alonso a contract for three years and $70 million, which was rejected by the slugger, who is seeking $200 million, something the New Yorkers cannot afford.

The question is: Why are the Mets letting go of their star player?

The Mets’ options to fill Alonso’s void

Alonso, 31, has not had his best seasons in recent years, hitting a poor .240 average in 2024, with a .788 OPS and 172 strikeouts, plus 34 home runs and 88 RBIs, a low average for what he is accustomed to.

The next question would then be: Who is the best option to take Alonso’s place with the Mets?Triston Casas, a 25-year-old Cuban-American, could be a good option. For now, Casas plays with the Boston Red Sox, but it is said that they are looking for a trade for the young player.

In 2024, he played 63 games due to injury, hitting 13 home runs with 32 RBIs. The Red Sox are looking for a third baseman, and Mets rookie Brett Baty could be a potential trade option.

Anthony Rizzo and Vlad Guerrero Jr.

Veteran Anthony Rizzo is another good replacement for Alonso at first base, although his 2024 season with the Yankees was not spectacular either, he could be a good option for the New Yorkers’ infield.

However, there would be no one better to take Alonso’s place than Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

The slugger is only 25 years old, and it is said that his best years are yet to come.

In 2024, he hit 30 home runs and drove in 103 runs, but despite his good numbers, the Toronto Blue Jays do not seem to be willing to offer him a contract extension that would make him a free agent for 2025, so the Dominican should be the first option for the New Yorkers.
