It is well known the admiration that the now Los Angeles player has for Lionel Messi, a player with whom he has recently coincided in MLS. However, on this occasion, Son opted for Cristiano Ronaldo as his favorite player for the 2026 World Cup.
Despite the fact that many footballers choose to name a player of their own nationality, Son, as always flaunting his honesty, chose the Portuguese star, whom he has previously named as the player who has inspired him throughout his professional career:
Cristiano Ronaldo has always been my biggest idol and I grew up watching him play at Manchester United alongside Park Ji Sung. I still watch him play and he is still my idol
Son chooses Cristiano Ronaldo as his favorite legendary player in World Cups
His compatriot Lee Jae-sung chose Park Ji Sung as his preferred legend, Brazilian Estevao pointed to Ronaldo Nazario as the best of all time with his national team, Colombian Luis Diaz chose Radamel Falcao, while Japanese Kubo pointed to Yuto Nagamoto, all of them choosing a footballer of their nationality, but for Son there is no discussion, the best is CR7.
The decision, however, has been questioned by his followers as for many, Ronaldo has not done enough in the World Cup to deserve that place because, compared to Messi, he has not only not been champion, but has fewer goals in the tournament. But the opinion of the LAFC striker seems to go beyond figures, but rather a personal issue
This is probably due to the position in which he plays and the characteristics of the player, in which he sees more similarities with the style of play of Cristiano Ronaldo in his time at Manchester United and Real Madrid, where he played as a winger on the left side
Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup numbers
Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the players who has played in the most World Cups with five appearances, tied with Lionel Messi, Lothar Matthaeus, Gianluigi Buffon and Andres Guardado. He could soon become the only player, along with Lionel Messi, to have minutes in five different World Cups
Ronaldo is currently recovering from a delicate hamstring injury that was initially thought to be a simple muscle strain, however, it seems that the Portuguese star will be part of the Portuguese team and will play his sixth and last World Cup with a team that arrives as one of the great favorites to lift the title.
