Pat McAfee is firing back at critics who questioned LeBron James’ decision to grant him an hour-long interview, a move that sparked a wave of online debate. Three days after “the LeBronversation” aired, McAfee took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the controversy, highlighting the racial undertones of some of the criticism.
“Good morning beautiful people… I still can’t believe LeBron had a conversation with a white guy the other day,” McAfee posted, seemingly in disbelief. The comment directly addresses the undercurrent of criticism regarding James’ choice of interviewer.
The Ringer’s Van Lathan was among those who weighed in, suggesting that James’ potential criticism of Stephen A. Smith would have been better directed elsewhere. “If LeBron is about to shit on Stephen A Smith, he shouldn’t have done it to Pat [McAfee],” Lathan wrote.
Kendrick Perkins also raised eyebrows with comments on “First Take,” noting James’ preference for partnering with JJ Redick and Steve Nash for his “Mind the Game” podcast, rather than other former NBA players of color.
A debate that goes beyond the courts
While the interview covered a range of topics, including James’ thoughts on his career’s twilight, the criticism regarding McAfee’s race has clearly resonated with the former NFL punter.
McAfee, known for his unfiltered style, is refusing to back down, addressing the critics head-on and adding fuel to the already heated discussion.
His comments highlight the ongoing debate about representation and platform choices in sports media, ensuring that the “LeBronversation” continues to generate buzz long after its initial airing.
