On March 1, Gervonta Davis will defend his title against super featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr., who, without being an opponent who strikes fear, does participate in the return to the ring of ‘Tank‘, who has announced that his retirement is approaching, although no one knows exactly how much time he has left as a professional boxer.

The announcement of ‘Tank’ Davis‘ farewell came last year at a press conference, when he claimed that he will say goodbye to boxing before 2026. Since then, there has been debate about whether it is the right decision, at the best time of his career or whether he was hasty.

Jeff Mayweather KEEPS IT 100 on Canelo vs Crawford DIFFERENT than Floyd fight & Tank Davis RETIRING

One of the people closest to Gervonta Davis is Jeff Mayweather, uncle of Floyd Mayweather Jr., who gave a hint of what is going through the mind of ‘Tank’ Davis.

“It is a prudent decision taken at the right time”

In an interview with FightHype in Las Vegas, the former super featherweight world champion spoke about ‘Tank’ Davis‘ upcoming fight:

“I can only choose Tank because I know what he can do,” he replied and admitted that he does not know much about what Roach can do in the ring. He was then asked about his decision to retire and said he agrees:

“To be honest, he’s doing the right thing,” even though there are many voices who have condemned his decision, as he indicated that it is a smart choice:

“I think it’s great for him to walk away from his sport with all his faculties and spend some time with his family, plus he made a lot of money, and I think that’s wise, I think, very wise for him,” Jeff Mayweather said.

Mayweather’s opinion is one of the few on the future of Gervonta Davis. Other well-known voices have not wanted to comment on ‘Tank’s’ motives or whether he might regret his decision in the future. One of them is Devin Haney, who did not want to comment on the matter, even though Gervonta’s fight is agreed at 140 pounds and could serve as a springboard for him to continue climbing.

However, these two stellar fighters in the intermediate divisions never wanted to face each other, not even when they were both in the lightweight division.

The same could not happen with Shakur Stevenson in his capacity as WBC champion, as he still aspires to a unification fight with ‘Tank’ Davis. Last year, they were close to a showdown, but it never materialized.

On his colleague’s retirement, Stevenson said: “If he wants to retire with the career he got, then go ahead and do what you got to do. I don’t agree with that. I think it’s soft, but that’s his fault”.
