Jaime Munguia is looking to relaunch his career after his defeats to Canelo Alvarez and Bruno Surace in 2024, but the situation could become more complicated beyond the sporting aspect.

To return to the big fights, Munguia (45-2) joined Eddy Reynoso, trainer of Saul Alvarez, for the rematch with Surace on May 3 in Saudi Arabia, which he won by unanimous decision.

However, after analyzing his sample A after the fight with the Frenchman, the Tijuana fighter tested positive in the test of the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) for the presence of testosterone metabolites, a prohibited substance.

After assuming his innocence through a video and a statement, Munguia requested the analysis of sample B and Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), expressed his support, pending the result of the second sample.

Obviously with Munguia we are 100 percent, only he knows what happened. What I am very clear about is that we believe in Munguia and surely he will clarify it soon and Eddy Reynoso is only dedicated to training.

Consequences for Jaime Munguia if doping is confirmed

If Jaime Munguia tests positive in the second sample, his punishments range from having his victory over Surace overturned, a suspension from fighting, as well as a possible fine, but the consequences will not be known until the possible doping is confirmed.

“We have had many cases where there is an adverse result and unfortunately by nature we all come to the conclusion that there is guilt. Jaime Munguia is being crucified, they are throwing Eddy Reynoso under the bus, who has absolutely nothing to do with it.

“I would like to express unconditional support for Jaime Munguia, obviously Reynoso has nothing to do with it and we are going to give him every opportunity to prove his innocence and in case he is guilty, that he assumes the consequences,” he told TV Azteca.
