Luka Doncic had the opportunity to deliver one of his best performances against his former team and he took it all the way. He had one of his most pointed performances of the season on Friday night, pouring in 35 points and 11 assists
While the win pushed the Lakers to a perfect 4-0 record and secured their spot in the knockout stage of the NBA Cup, the storyline resonating across the league centered on Doncic’s symbolic statement against the front office that traded him away.
Doncic not only handled the offense but the defense too, sinking the free throws that finally buried Dallas.
A performance with subtext
As everyone knew, the matchup was going to carry a weight that extended beyond group-stage implications. Earlier this month, the Mavericks dismissed general manager Nico Harrison, whose controversial deal was the reason why Doncic ended in the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis. The halo from that decision is still present in Dallas, with many calling it one of the most consequential front-office miscalculations in recent memory.
While Doncic did not say anything about the trade directly yesterday, his performance did much of the talking. As Sports Illustrated noted in a recent breakdown of Dallas’ struggles, “you just can’t trade that guy.” Friday’s game reinforced that conclusion as Doncic fully dominated the game.
Mavericks struggle to turn page
Dallas showed fight very early in the game, going to halftime with a narrow lead, but as soon as the Lakers found their rhythm in the third quarter, the Mavericks simply could not match Doncic’s performance.
Dallas’ loss also underscored the ongoing questions surrounding the Mavericks’ roster direction since Harrison’s dismissal. Dallas has tried to go through rotations and experimented with new lineups, but the consistency they are looking for is still unfound, making clear that the Doncic trade continues to loom large.
