To say that Luka Doncic‘s return to Dallas was emotional would be a massive understatement. On Wednesday night, the NBA superstar made his first appearance at the Mavericks’ arena as an opposing player. Naturally, Luka showed out, pouring in 45 points while helping the Los Angeles Lakers defeat his former team. Doncic may have been fueled by revenge, but it was not an easy night for him mentally.
While the team ran a video tribute for him before the game began, Doncic couldn’t help but cry profusely. At that moment, it became increasingly clear that he never wanted to leave the city of Dallas. He never forced his way out; in fact, he was forced out against his will. That emotion on Doncic’s face gave a sliver of hope to Mavs fans that he may come back at some point in the future. That notion was amplified the day after the game.
Luka Doncic participates in community event in Dallas day after Lakers-Mavs game
While his Lakers teammates flew home following the win, Doncic decided to stay in Dallas for a little bit longer. He showed up at an event for local youth basketball players, in partnership with Jordan and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Once again, Doncic showed how much he cared, and still cares, about the community in Dallas. For him to show up the day after an emotionally and physically draining game speaks volumes to his character.
It also speaks volumes to how much the city means to him. Given that it’s obvious he never wanted to leave, Mavericks fans can cling on to the hope that his ties to the city could lead to a return before his career is over. Technically, he could leave the Lakers as early as the summer of 2026.
