In an exclusive interview with MARCA, Spanish golfer Luis Masaveu reflects on his short yet promising career, his goals, achievements, and how his life has changed since joining LIV Golf.

With LIV Golf Miami just around the corner, anticipation is building. For this young Spanish talent, the challenge posed by the course is as stimulating as it is demanding. “It’s a tough, long course with wind, making it a real test. It’s crucial to hit well from the tee,” he confidently states. His preparation has been intense, and he arrives with high expectations.

The Fireballs GC team, led by the experienced Sergio García, has dominated the last three stages of LIV. Does that add extra pressure? “No, we are calm. We have done great work in the last tournaments, and we know we can’t always win, but we’re going to fight for another title,” he affirms with determination.

Weather conditions will play a crucial role in his performance. “With wind, the course becomes more difficult, so we have to take precautions,” he explains. However, his experience and strategy could make the difference in the tournament.

A Love for Golf Born at Age Two

His journey with golf started early: “Since I was two years old, with a plastic club, I spent hours hitting balls in the yard. I’ve always loved golf and sports in general. When I turned 14, I knew I wanted to dedicate myself to this professionally.” His progress has been unstoppable ever since.

Family support was fundamental. “My father, who had a 4 handicap, was passionate about golf, and I always accompanied him. I was also lucky enough to live just five minutes away from a golf course. Living so close allowed me to train from a very young age.”

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Sergio García, and Jon Rahm were his great idols. Today, he shares a team with García in LIV Golf. “It was a joy when Sergio invited me to his team. Playing alongside him and learning from his experience is a dream come true.”

García is not just a role model but also a mentor. “He helps us a lot, always looking out for us. He likes us to have dinner together, to practice together. In Hong Kong, after a poor first round, he supported me and gave me key advice to improve. Among so many travels and tournaments, having that bond is crucial. With the entire Fireballs GC team, we are like a family.”

A Historic Milestone at the British Open

The Spanish golfer made history by becoming the first Spanish amateur to make the cut at the 2024 British Open. “At the time, you don’t realize what you’ve accomplished. Over time, you appreciate it more, but as competitors, we always want to improve. I made the cut, but my weekend performance wasn’t the best.”

With his entry into LIV, his recognition in Spain has grown. “Before, playing as an amateur, it was only noticed if you won. Now, in LIV, the impact is much greater.”

“My goal is clear: to become the world’s number one, win majors, and play in the Ryder Cup. In a few years, I would love to wear the green jacket,” he declares with ambition.

The Sacrifices of the Elite

The road to success requires commitment. “I dedicate between 7 and 8 hours to golf, plus 2 or 3 in the gym. Balancing this with personal life is complicated. We travel a lot and spend time away from home, but I try to make the most of my free moments with family.”

Speaking about his teammate Sergio García, he highlights a key aspect: “His determination and intensity in the game surprised me. It’s not just about technique but also about the intention and mindset with which you approach each shot. That is what makes the difference.”

With discipline, talent, and the ambition of the greats, this young Spaniard is shaping up to be one of the future stars of world golf.
