With both of his sons-Shedeur and Shilo Sanders-no longer suiting up for the Colorado Buffaloes, Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders is entering an uncharted chapter of his coaching career.

But if you ask fellow NFL legend and current podcaster Cam Newton, it’s a chapter that could define Sanders as one of the greats.

Now leading a team free from any direct family involvement, Sanders recently inked a five-year, $54 million contract extension to continue shaping the Colorado program.

The deal signals full confidence from the university, and according to Newton, it’s also a moment where the world may finally witness the unfiltered brilliance of Coach Prime.

This is where Coach Prime will shine

During the latest episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton, the former NFL MVP expressed his belief that Sanders’ coaching prowess will truly blossom now that he’s no longer balancing fatherhood on the sidelines. With his sons gone, Newton argued, there’s no emotional conflict preventing Sanders from making tough football decisions.

“I think the greatness of Deion Sanders as a coach will now come to fruition,” Newton declared. “I think they win a national championship without his sons there… I asked Warren Sapp, ‘Yo, is Deion really coaching his kids?’ He said, ‘Oh no. Prime, he’s the truth. He will kick his sons out the meeting’… I needed to hear that.”

It’s a strong endorsement of Coach Prime’s authenticity and leadership. And given his history-pulling Shilo from the SWAC Championship game in 2021 for being late to a team meeting-there’s evidence that he holds everyone, even his own children, to the same standard.

Still, Newton admitted the tightrope Sanders had to walk was a difficult one.

“I look at it through the safeties coach where it’s like, we’ve got a dude that’s really better than him. If he was anybody else, could we bench him?” Newton asked, referencing Shilo’s playing time. “Not to say that they deserve to get benched; that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying, could you make that call?”

But with the personal attachments now removed from the roster, Newton firmly believes Sanders is free to make every call with only the program in mind.
