The tennis world is embroiled in controversy after an eyebrow-raising decision at the French Open. On Tuesday morning, Lorenzo Musetti inadvertently struck a line umpire-an incident eerily similar to the one that led to Novak Djokovic’s disqualification from the 2020 US Open. Yet, Musetti’s case resulted in a dramatically different outcome.

Musetti edged out Frances Tiafoe 5-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the French Open quarterfinals. However, he nearly lost his shot at the semifinals due to an impulsive action-he kicked a ball to take it out of the way, which unintentionally hit the line umpire at the back of the court.

The Italian immediately apologized and was permitted to continue the match with only a warning. Nearly five years ago, Djokovic faced a strikingly similar situation. Although his hit was slightly more forceful, many fans are now calling out Musetti and the French Open for what they see as a clear double standard.

Should Musetti have been disqualified?

In both cases, the incidents were accidental, the result of momentary carelessness. Both umpires were unharmed, and both players offered immediate apologies. The key distinction may lie in where the ball landed-Musetti’s struck the umpire’s shoulder, while Djokovic’s hit the umpire in the face.

This perceived inconsistency has sparked outrage across social media. “He should have been disqualified-rules need to be the same for everyone!” one fan argued, reflecting the general sentiment.

“That’s ridiculous-he should be kicked out!” another wrote. A third echoed the frustration: “That’s so disrespectful.” Another furious fan demanded answers: “How is this not a default after the Djokovic episode at the US Open? We can’t have double standards. This will only fuel conspiracy theories about Italian players being protected. Shame on the referee!”

Musetti’s statements only add fuel to the fire

During his post-match press conference, Musetti addressed the controversy: “Honestly, it was a really unlucky coincidence. Yeah, I was honestly scared, because I really didn’t want to harm anyone, of course. So I immediately went to the line umpire, and of course I said ‘sorry,’ I apologize to everyone.”

He acknowledged that he deserved the warning but justified the decision to let him continue: “I think the umpire saw that there was no intention behind it, and that’s probably why he let me play on.”

Despite his explanation, many fans remain unconvinced-especially regarding the chair umpire’s judgment. Regardless of the backlash, Musetti secured his spot in the semifinals, where he will take on Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz this Friday.
