The Jacksonville Jaguars have made bold moves during the offseason, hiring head coach Liam Coen and moving up in the NFL Draft to acquire promising rookie Travis Hunter. These strategic decisions have a clear objective: to lay the groundwork for Trevor Lawrence to have an explosive season in 2025. According to reports from training camp, the new coach is already implementing a detailed plan to maximize the potential of his quarterback.
Liam Coen’s approach with Lawrence focuses on two main areas: improving his footwork and honing his chemistry with the young receivers. Coen has put Lawrence through intense “progression drills” designed to force him to read the field beyond his first option. This strategy responds to the demands of modern football, where defenses change their formations unpredictably.
An important evolution in the game
In an interview with ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Coen highlighted the importance of this evolution: “We’re working a lot on progression drills… what our defense does is that the ‘reads’ before the snap are different than after the snap… we’ve tried to put him in enough positions where he has to progress and move on to the second, third and sometimes fourth option in the read”
The coach also emphasized the need for Lawrence to use his entire arsenal, including his ability to run, adding: “Let’s get used to using your legs as a weapon a little bit too. You can run.” Coen is looking to replicate the success he had with Baker Mayfield, whose dynamism and ability to improvise were key.
A hidden talent
In addition to the work with Lawrence, Coen has praised the talent of rookie Travis Hunter, who could be a determining factor in the success of the offense. Hunter, known for his versatility, has impressed the coaching staff with his ability to play both offense and defense.
Coen confirmed this approach to ESPN: “We gave him the job that we wanted to give him on offense early on and then we were able to put him on defense and have him get enough reps … on both sides of the ball, with quality work”.
