LeBron James went viral a few days ago after he confronted veteran journalist Stephen A. Smith in front of a packed arena at the Crypto.com Arena. He stepped up and spoke to Stephen about his critical comments regarding his son, Bronny James.
Yesterday’s game against the Celtics marked LeBron James’s first appearance since the confrontation. He faced the Boston Celtics, the second-best team in the Eastern Conference. He first said hello to his friend and former US Olympic teammate, Jayson Tatum. Afterwards, he made a little joke and playfully scared one of his best friends and former teammates, Richard Jefferson, who helped him come back from a 3-1 deficit against the Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals.
Richard Jefferson was visibly startled, which made Lebron laugh. Then, their smiles transitioned into a brief, serious conversation about the incident with Stephen A. Smith. Though the video lacks audio, it appears LeBron was calmly explaining to Richard, “Right, right, right, that’s the only thing I was concerned about. Once he mentioned ‘as a father,’ that was the issue.” Richard Jefferson nodded in understanding, acknowledging Lebron’s point.
Jefferson played for eight NBA teams and was never the star player on any of them. He earned an All-Rookie Second Team selection during his time with the New Jersey Nets, now the Brooklyn Nets. However, his most significant contributions came alongside LeBron James between 2015 and 2017, where he served as a valuable veteran presence. During that period, they reached the NBA Finals every season, but only lifted the trophy in 2016 after a remarkable comeback, in which Richard played a fundamental role, particularly his defensive effort against the Warriors.
LeBron is now playing alongside his son, Bronny James, who clearly does not yet possess NBA-level skill, but hopefully he will develop it. The Lakers are seeking to tie the Celtics’ record of 18 championships, as LeBron aims for his fifth NBA title. With Luka Doni now on the roster, they could form a formidable combination for the playoffs, however, they will face stiff competition in the Western Conference. Luka Doncic’s playmaking and scoring ability will be a key factor in their playoff success.
The incident with Stephen A. Smith, following comments that were perceived as overly critical of Bronny James’s potential, reminds us that despite his NBA fame and status, for LeBron, family is paramount. He felt compelled to protect his son, and he did so. The public reaction was largely supportive of LeBron’s actions, with many praising his dedication to his family.
