LeBron James is sacrificing touches and statistics to help Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves thrive – and the Los Angeles Lakers are winning because of it.
Following a 142-130 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night, James made it clear he is embracing a different role as the Lakers evolve into a team driven by multiple playmakers rather than a single focal point.
The 41-year-old superstar, long known for carrying teams offensively, said he is willing to scale back his individual production if it leads to victories.
“I mean, if it benefits others, it benefits the team. The team is most important,” James told reporters. “Everybody’s successful when we win. So yeah, it is a sacrifice.”
I know what I’m capable of still doing as an individual, but what’s important for this team, I’m able to adapt to. … And that’s the only thing that matters. And the win is the only thing that matters.
Reddick explained LeBron’s new role
Playing his first game after missing three contests with multiple injuries, James finished with a lean stat line, while operating more as a facilitator alongside Doncic and Reaves:

Head coach JJ Redick acknowledged that James’ responsibilities have shifted since the Lakers acquired Doncic in a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Mavericks last season.
After spending his entire career as a high-usage No. 1 option, James has adjusted to sharing primary ball-handling duties.
“He’s been a high-usage player and the No. 1 option his whole career, and I know he wants to win,”Redick said. “He had to make some sacrifices when we traded for Luka last year. He understands how important it is for Luka and AR to have time on the ball.”
Redick added that James recognizes Doncic as “the engine” of the offense, emphasizing that the veteran star’s priority remains impacting winning rather than individual numbers.
The results justify LeBron’s sacrifice
The statistical shift reflects that transition. James is averaging 21.4 points per game this season – his lowest scoring average since his rookie year in 2003-04 – as the Lakers lean more heavily on Doncic’s playmaking and Reaves’ expanded offensive role.
Despite the adjustment, the results have been encouraging. The Lakers improved to 41-25 with Thursday’s win and sit third in the Western Conference while riding a four-game winning streak.
If the new balance continues producing performances like Thursday’s offensive outburst, Los Angeles could extend that run when it faces the fifth-place Denver Nuggets on Saturday.
For James, the evolving role represents less about personal accolades and more about prolonging championship contention – even if that means sacrificing the numbers that defined much of his historic career.
