What’s happening with the Los Angeles Lakers this season isn’t something that occurs frequently; in fact, it’s extremely rare. Only a handful of times in history have we seen a father and son play at the same time in a major sport, let alone on the same team. When Bronny James joined the team and stepped onto a court with his father, LeBron James, it was emotional and special for everyone involved.
While Bronny hasn’t been able to establish himself as an important role player for the team yet, sharing the day-to-day with his father is a blessing in and of itself. And it’s not just the two of them who are enjoying it, as Savannah James has found herself attending more games than usual and being more present in order to witness history.
With Bronny getting back into the good graces of Lakers head coach JJ Redick on the back of a string of good G-League performances, Savannah has had more opportunities to see the two together recently. Before they faced the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, LeBron couldn’t help but go full dad mode as he hovered over to Bronny during warmups to tell him to go talk to his mother in the stands: “Your momma said that was her calling you“.
LeBron James dominates at MSG in what has become a tradition
With Savannah in attendance at a historic venue, LeBron made sure to put on a show. He poured in 33 points and completed a triple-double with 11 rebounds and 12 assists. He became the first 40-year-old in NBA history with multiple triple-doubles.
Only one other player in basketball history had put together a game with at least 33 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists at Madison Square Garden: Oscar Robertson in 1965 and 1963.
