LeBron James and his son Bronny James are currently involved in a legal dispute stemming from a car accident that occurred in November 2022.
Two women, April Almanza Lopez and Kiara Rae McGillen, have filed a lawsuit alleging that the James duo’s vehicle collided with theirs on a highway in Littlerock, California. The plaintiffs claim to have sustained injuries necessitating medical treatment and assert that their vehicle suffered damage and depreciation as a result of the incident.
Details of the allegations
According to the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court in October 2024, Lopez and McGillen accuse LeBron and Bronny of negligence in the ownership and operation of their vehicle. The plaintiffs detail various injuries, including neck, back, and shoulder pain, as well as headaches.
They report incurring substantial medical expenses, with Lopez’s costs approximating $234,582.22 and McGillen’s around $48,007.80. Additionally, they claim their vehicle was damaged and devalued, rendering it unusable. The lawsuit seeks unspecified general damages, medical expenses, and compensation for lost wages.
In response to the allegations, legal representatives for LeBron and Bronny have categorically denied each claim. They assert that if the plaintiffs experienced any loss or injury, it was due to their own actions and not as a result of any negligence on the part of the James family.
The defense further contends that any events leading to the alleged injuries were unavoidable and occurred without any breach of duty by the defendants. Consequently, they are seeking the dismissal of the case and the denial of any compensation to the plaintiffs.
Context of the lawsuit
Notably, the lawsuit was filed just hours before LeBron and Bronny made history by playing together in a regular-season NBA game on October 22, 2024.
This marked the first time a father and son duo appeared together on an NBA court. Despite the legal proceedings, LeBron expressed immense joy over this milestone, stating it was a moment he would never forget.
The legal process is ongoing, with the next court hearing scheduled for February 19, 2025. Both parties continue to prepare for the proceedings, which will aim to resolve the allegations and determine any potential liabilities.
