The saga between Lamont Roach Jr. and Gervonta Davis seems to be far from over. Rumors point to a rematch this summer, but there is no confirmation. ‘Tank‘ is unusually quiet on social media, giving no clues. More information is expected to clarify whether he will fight, possibly in June
The first fight between Gervonta and Lamont ended in a lot of controversy. The fight took a turn in the ninth round, when ‘Tank‘ went to his corner to wipe his eyes, claiming a “substance” was irritating him. Referee Steve Willis did not count it as a knockdown, which led the judges not to count it in the scoring
The decision caused a total uproar, as many believed that Roach Jr. deserved the victory. The dispute intensified over time, and although the New York Athletic Commission investigated, it was unable to change the outcome and the possibility of a rematch is growing stronger
All for the legacy
In a chat with All The Smoke Fight,Lamont Roach Jr. confessed that the first time he was called to be a possible opponent of Gervonta Davis, he already had in mind that he could beat him
“So when we really started talking business, that’s when we started weighing our options for real. I had something on the table,”Lamont commented
Before fans started with their theories that he fought Gervonta just for the money, Roach Jr. makes it quite clear
“For those who think I accept this fight for money, it was not like that, because I actually had a higher offer than the fight against Davis,” were his words that surprised more than one.
In this case, why did you say yes to ‘Tank‘?
“First of all, it’s a mess. But second, look at what they’re going to do, look at how they consider it now. The most dangerous fighters are some of the most dangerous in the world,” Lamont said in the interview.
And he’s right to a certain extent, a victory was going to establish him in the boxing elite. The opportunity does not present itself every day and it seems that he made a very intelligent decision, he was very close to beating him and earned the respect of all boxing connoisseurs
