The Los Angeles Lakers’ offseason ended earlier than expected, with a first-round playoff loss to Minnesota delivering a tough blow. However, the setback cleared the path for team owner Jeanie Buss and the front office to shift focus to one of the franchise’s biggest priorities: Luka Doncic’s contract.

Doncic’s arrival in Los Angeles was one of the most debated moves in recent months, analyzed from every angle by fans and media alike. Most agree the Lakers emerged as the clear winners in the trade with Dallas.

Now, with two years remaining on his $215 million deal from the Mavericks, Doncic is eligible for an extension. The Serbian star has multiple options, and the Lakers’ stance is clear-they’re willing to do whatever it takes to keep him.

Lakers have the checkbook open

According to The Athletic insiders Jovan Buha and Sam Amick, “Team sources indicate the Lakers will accommodate whatever contract structure Doncic desires.” Essentially, the franchise is handing its superstar a blank check, leaving Doncic with key decisions about his future.

The first option for the guard is signing a four-year, $229 million extension after August 2. However, his most lucrative path would be a three-year, $165 million deal with a player option for 2028-2029-potentially paving the way for a five-year, $418 million extension in 2028.

The Lakers are determined to avoid the last possibility at all costs: Doncic opting out and becoming a free agent after the 2026-2027 season. If that happens, he could negotiate a five-year, $296 million contract with Los Angeles or a four-year, $219 million deal with another team.

LeBron James weighs in-sort of

With Doncic’s contract situation at a pivotal stage, many had expected LeBron James to take an active role in securing the Serbian’s future in Los Angeles. However, James made it clear that’s not his responsibility.

James acknowledged that the Lakers acquired Doncic to secure the franchise’s long-term success, but ultimately, the decision rests with him. “But I hope, obviously, [he stays long-term]. Fans f*cking love him here,” James remarked bluntly.
