The Pumas board of directors has made it a priority to extend the contract of the Costa Rican goalkeeper, whose contract expires at the end of the Clausura 2026.

Both parties have already begun formal talks, with the clear intention of keeping Navas as a key figure in the sporting project. From the player’s camp, there is also a willingness to continue in Mexico, where he has felt comfortable both on and off the pitch.

A close agreement, but with key differences

Despite the progress, the renewal is not yet closed. The main obstacle lies in differences between the conditions sought by the player and the club’s proposal.

The main negotiation points include:

  • The length of the new contract
  • A possible salary improvement
  • The sporting role in the future considering his age

In fact, recent reports indicate that the deal is “very advanced,” although there are still details to be worked out before it is made official.

The contract and time are against him

The most pressing factor is time. Navas’ contract expires in June 2026, which opens the door for other clubs to try to sign him if there is no renewal.

There are already teams paying attention to his situation, both in Liga MX and in other markets, which increases the pressure on Pumas to close the deal.

Keylor Navas wants to stay, but it’s not just up to him

The goalkeeper himself has been clear: his intention is to continue, but the final decision will depend on both parties reaching an agreement.

“In a negotiation, both parties have to agree,” explained the Costa Rican, making it clear that there is still no total consensus.

In addition, he reiterated that he feels comfortable at the club, although he did not guarantee that he would stay.

Pumas is playing a key piece for its project

Since his arrival in 2025, Navas became an immediate reference for the team, providing experience and leadership in goal.

His continuity is considered fundamental to the sporting project, especially towards international tournaments and the consolidation of the team in Liga MX.
