Kevin Gates is catching serious heat after sharing some unsolicited opinions about the marriage between NBA superstar LeBron James and his wife Savannah James.
What started as a casual Instagram video quickly turned into a viral storm after Gates questioned the way Savannah looks at her husband.
In the video, Gates is on the phone with a friend and says he’s been paying attention to couples, particularly in the sports world.
That’s when he dropped the head-turning take: he wouldn’t want to trade places with LeBron James-not because of fame, pressure, or basketball-but because of how Savannah looks at him.
“You act like the warden of the jail, like you came here to police me. You not d**d out like these white women,” Gates said, referring to Savannah. “I just couldn’t do it. It hurt me to see that. Man, you dive on the floor behind that n*a man.”
He continued to speculate that Savannah James always seems to have a disapproving or demanding expression on her face, claiming she looks at LeBron like, “he could be doing more,” which Gates found baffling.
“What more could LeBron do?” he asked, seemingly annoyed on the NBA star’s behalf.
Fans defend Savannah James
The backlash was instant. Fans and supporters of Savannah James-who’s widely respected for her grace, loyalty, and role as a supportive partner and mother-flocked to social media to call out Gates for what many labeled misogynistic, racist, and deeply out of line commentary.
“Imagine disrespecting a Black woman for not performing like some fantasy character for your entertainment,” one user tweeted. “Savannah minds her business, raises her children, and supports her husband. Meanwhile Kevin Gates is on IG ranting about her like she owes him something. Be serious.”
Gates seemed to anticipate the backlash, but that didn’t stop him from continuing the rant-while also claiming he has “nothing but love” for LeBron.
The viral moment also captured the voice of Brittany Renner in the background, who could be heard laughing off-camera during Gates‘ monologue. At one point, he told her, “Ain’t nobody going to f*** with you about that. You don’t have to walk out the room.” She responded that she wasn’t trying to interrupt his video.
