Kevin Durant doesn’t want to be like Draymond or JJ Redick after NBA retirement

As the Houston Rockets move through the 2025-26 season, Kevin Durant has already made one thing clear about his future. He’s not joining the media circus.

During a recent appearance on Bobbi Althoff’s podcast, Durant opened up about what comes next once he decides to hang up his sneakers. His answer was short, honest, and perfectly Durant. “I don’t know. Sit around. Chill,” he said.

When Althoff asked if he was “retiring from life,” Durant laughed. “Who knows? I might do that or I might just do a bunch of shit,” he replied.

Then came the real moment. Althoff mentioned how many NBA stars have turned into podcasters or broadcasters after retirement. Durant cut her off before she could finish.

Uh, no. I thought I would want to do that a few years ago. Now it’s just oversaturated with people

Kevin Durant Is Over the Media World

That single quote says a lot. Durant sees what many fans already do: every week, another former player launches a podcast, a YouTube show, or a TV segment. He respects it, but it’s not for him.

The 37-year-old forward has spent nearly two decades under the spotlight. Between interviews, cameras, and social media controversies, Durant has lived the kind of constant exposure that makes silence feel like luxury. For him, walking away from basketball might finally mean walking away from attention.

Still, Durant isn’t disappearing completely. Through Boardroom, the company he co-founded with Rich Kleiman, he remains involved in sports media and culture – but as a creator, not a commentator. He prefers to build conversations instead of sitting behind a desk analyzing others.

Now in his first full season with Houston after arriving in a massive seven-team trade from Phoenix, Durant continues to prove he’s far from done. Through four games, he’s averaging 27.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block while shooting 52.2 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from deep in 36.3 minutes per night.

His latest performance was another reminder of his elite consistency. In Houston’s 139-121 road win over the Toronto Raptors, Durant scored 31 points with five rebounds, three blocks, and one assist on 11-for-19 shooting. The Rockets improved to 2-2 and will face the Boston Celtics next before returning home to play the Dallas Mavericks.

He’s said before that he’ll know it’s time to retire when the game stops being fun. But when that moment comes, don’t expect a farewell podcast or a studio debut. Durant sounds ready to choose peace over platforms and let the world talk without him.
