For a while, it looked like everything was set up for Kenny Pickett to get his shot at redemption. Having signed with the Cleveland Browns in free agency, Pickett held off the likes of Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders for much of the summer. But then the injury bug hit hard.

A hamstring injury as July neared its end halted his momentum, and put him on the backburner up until now. Since then, Pickett has watched from the sidelines as the rookies did well in their Browns debuts, and Flacco was named the team’s starting quarterback for the regular season. Pickett really only has one chance left to impress head coach Kevin Stefanski and gain some ground on Flacco before Week 1. But that opportunity is now shut.

Kenny Pickett ruled out of Cleveland Browns’ preseason finale

Pickett likely would have hoped to play in the final preseason game and put some great stuff on tape for the coaching staff. That won’t happen, though. Pickett has already been ruled out for the upcoming game, meaning he will have missed every single preseason contest.

What makes matters worse for Pickett is that Sanders should be back from injury for the game. Sanders and Gabriel will get yet another chance to show off how much they’ve developed by playing in the game. That could put Pickett’s Browns future in question.

If the rookies look ready to be backups for Flacco, then Stefanski and the front office could opt to trade away Pickett for some type of compensation. Keeping four quarterbacks on the roster never felt very plausible, and this could be the excuse the team needed to ship one of them away.
