Indiana Fever shooting guard Kelsey Mitchell scared fans a lot after the fainting episode due to an intense leg cramping in Tuesday night’s playoff semifinal against the Las Vegas Aces in the third quarter.
With a bit more than five minutes remaining in the quarter, Mitchell fell to the floor without any contact, clutching her leg. Medical responsibles rushed to her side, and as a stretcher was brought out, she managed to walk off the court under her own power. As she left the game, Mitchell had scored 15 points, achieving a great 3-for-3 from outside the arc.
Rushed to the hospital
Head coach Stephanie White confirmed that Mitchell was experiencing severe lower-body cramping and had been taken to a hospital to receive intravenous fluids. White could be seen talking with emotion when referring to the incident in postgame interviews, stating through tears that the team “had all heart” and encouraged players to “play for our teammate.“
A heavy blow for the Fever
Mitchell was the driving force of the Fever during the postseason, particularly with the roster already full by injuries. Her unexpected exit created a strategic and emotional void in the Fever’s Game 5 battle with the reigning champions.
The Fever went on to lose 90-83 and put an end to their playoff season. However, that came to the side while they were seeing their star guard depart for medical treatment, giving a bit of a pause to teammates and people in the stands.
What to expect from now
So far, the diagnosis is only cramping and no structural damage reported. Mitchell’s recovery will be based on rest, fluids, and continued observation from medical professionals.
Indiana’s season was shortened in Las Vegas, but Mitchell’s health is priority number one right now for the Fever, because they must turn their attention to rebuilding for next season at some point, with the hope their crucial guard returns healthy.
