As the Kansas City Chiefs opened training camp at Missouri Western State University, all eyes were on one man: Rashee Rice, who could face suspension in the 2025/26 NFL season.

The wide receiver’s availability is on the line following the news that he pleaded guilty to two third-degree felonies stemming from a 119mph street race in Dallas that resulted in a multicar crash.

He was handed a five-year probation sentence from the local courts, but now the NFL’s disciplinary process is unfolding and he remains under investigation, potentially face a suspension of anywhere from two to eight games.

However, amid swirling rumors of a looming NFL suspension, legal complications, and a tense receiver battle, Andy Reid made a definitive statement: Rice will enter the preseason as the team’s top wide receiver.

“You learn from your mistakes,” Reid told reporters. “That’s the important part.

“So all of that. On the field, he’s just been full speed ahead-no pun intended. We’re going to progress as normal with him.

“He’ll go in and take all the reps that he’ll normally take. We always rotate that position, so depending on what happens here…

“Whoever needs to play will step in and know what they are doing and be in good shape to do it.”

Rashee Rice determined to prove himself with Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs’ decision to move forward with Rice atop the wide receiver hierarchy reflects both a vote of confidence and a calculated risk as they do have alternative options in Xavier Worthy, Travis Kelce and Hollywood Brown.

And Rice himself has remained focused despite the legal distractions, preparing for his first full season at the Arrowhead Stadium since becoming a Super Bowl champion as a rookie.

“Honestly, it’s still in the works,” Rice told reporters after a recent practice. “My legal team is handling that.

“All I can do is focus on what I can control right now, and that’s me doing what I do best right here on the field.

“I realized just how precious every opportunity and moment can be. Being out here, learning from Coach Reid and playing alongside Patrick [Mahomes] is truly a gift, a blessing.

“Even when I’m not able to be out there with my team, I’m still going to be working as hard as I can so I can be back out there with them as soon as possible.”

If Rice is sidelined when the league hands down its decision, Mahomes and Reid will be tasked with reconfiguring an already unsettled receiving corps in the new season.

If he is available, then the side has one of their best outfits on hand for their opener against the Los Angeles Chargers on September 5, a game played in Sao Paulo in Brazil.
