Julio Cesar Chavez is one of the greatest sportsmen in Mexico’s history and one of the most beloved celebrities by the general public for his frank personality.

When it comes to laughing, criticizing or accepting mistakes, he does it genuinely and openly, which has left him with followers beyond boxing, the sport in which he shone in the 80s and 90s.

But just as he achieved all the success, he lost everything he earned due to his addictions and the bad company he surrounded himself with.

In an interview for the podcast Creativo, the boxing legend acknowledged that a complaint from Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. made him rethink and change his life.

“I didn’t want to get into that subject because (voice breaks), but I’m going to tell you… I’ve always been a crybaby, it makes me a lot of courage. My son Julio told me: ‘Dad, you don’t want to see me champion’. That’s why I left the shit, it was very hard for me and it still is, but I live for the just for today.”

“Children disarm you, it’s tough. When you have children you will understand me. Imagine that your children tell you: ‘Dad, you don’t love me, you don’t want to see me as a champion, you are more interested in drugs and alcohol than me‘”, said the former boxer, partly with a choked voice.

The Los Chavez series brings the family together

Bad times left a family fractured, but the proposal of the Los Chavez series helped to heal the problems and brought them back together.

Thank God I saw Julio as world champion, clean. He was the one who took me to a clinic for the first time and then I had to admit him. It was many very difficult years, but everything happens for a reason. They say that God’s timing is perfect and my children are doing very well today. I can’t believe it, it was so many years with Julio and Omar’s pill addiction.

“God gave me another chance at life and I have taken advantage of it, that championship of helping people against addictions is worth more than any boxing championship… the Los Chavez series that I am doing today has reunited me with my children, Julio, Omar and Christian did not speak to me, but doing it reunited us,” said the analyst on TV Azteca.
