Anthony Joshua, former world heavyweight champion in several organisations, has been released from hospital after the serious car accident he suffered in Nigeria in which two friends who were with him in the car lost their lives.

The boxer, who was treated for various minor injuries after the Lexus Jeep in which he was travelling as a passenger suffered a tyre blowout and crashed into a stationary lorry on the Lagos-Ibadan motorway, later visited the mortuary where the bodies of his friends were “being prepared for repatriation”, the statement said.

In addition to being longtime friends of Joshua, Ghami was his sports and physical rehabilitation coach for more than a decade, while Ayodele was his personal trainer. Both were 36 years old.

Joshua, who was on holiday in his family’s home country, had fights scheduled in Saudi Arabia in the coming months and a likely showdown with Tyson Fury. He recently knocked out YouTuber Jake Paul in an exhibition fight.

According to local media, the Nigerian police have launched a search for the driver of the parked truck involved in the serious accident, as he fled the scene after the collision.
