Alex Bregman’s exit from free agency has taken longer than planned, after being ranked among the top 10 players in the offseason, but a miscalculation and strategy in negotiations have him stuck.
Bregman wants a six-year, $200 million contract and, for now, no team has been willing to even come close to his demands. However, it was reported that a few months ago, the Houston Astros themselves offered him six years and $156 million, but the third baseman rejected the offer.
This Saturday the Astros had a FanFest and there, the Venezuelan Jose Altuve did not hesitate to respond that in order for the return of Alex Bregman to happen, he would be willing to accept to go to a position in which he has never played, such as the outfield.
“For Alex, I would do anything… As I said, he is one of the best players in the whole league and definitely one of the best players on the team. We want him to stay, so I’m willing to do whatever it takes to keep him,” said Altuve, who is one of the best players in Major League Baseball at second base.
Jose Altuve would do anything to win
Jose Altuve has won two World Series titles with the Astros, in 2017 and 2022, but the hunger to be champion again is still there and during the FanFest he told the media that although he has never played in the outfield, he would be willing to do so because with Bregman they would have a better chance of lifting another trophy.
“I want to win and he’s going to be a guy that’s going to make this team better,” Altuve said, adding “We have a better chance of winning a championship with him. That’s my answer: I’m willing to do whatever it takes to keep him.”
