The Golden State Warriors have suffered a major blow to their lineup as forward Jonathan Kuminga will be sidelined for at least three weeks due to a significant lateral right ankle sprain. The team announced the injury after an MRI on Sunday, following their 121-113 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Kuminga, who sustained the injury late in the second quarter, landed awkwardly in the paint and immediately exited the game. Leaving Chase Center on crutches, the 22-year-old was in the midst of a breakout stretch that had fans and analysts buzzing about his potential to elevate the Warriors’ postseason hopes.

Before the injury, Kuminga had been showcasing the best basketball of his young career. Over the past 14 games, he averaged 20.5 points per game, including three 20-point performances in his last four outings and back-to-back career-high 34-point games. His ability to score efficiently and bring explosive athleticism to the Warriors’ rotation had made him a crucial piece of their game plan.

“Brutal,” head coach Steve Kerr said Sunday, reflecting on the loss of Kuminga.“JK has been playing so well and has become a key part of what we’re doing. He’s our most athletic scorer and finisher, and his absence will be felt.”

Warriors look to bench depth as Kuminga joins growing injury list

Despite the setback, Kerr expressed confidence in the team’s depth to weather the storm. “We do feel good about our ability to withstand his loss. Kyle [Anderson] and Moses [Moody] will see more opportunities,” Kerr added.

Kuminga’s injury adds to the Warriors’ growing list of sidelined players. Brandin Podziemski (abdominal strain) and Gary Payton II (calf) remain out, though Podziemski is nearing a return. Kerr noted that the team was initially hopeful Podziemski could suit up Sunday against the Sacramento Kings but determined he needed additional recovery time.

Kuminga has been averaging a career-high 16.8 points and 5 rebounds per game this season. Last month, he became the first Warriors player to score 30 or more points in consecutive games off the bench since Cazzie Russell in 1974, a testament to his growth and importance to the team.

The Warriors, currently battling for playoff positioning in a competitive Western Conference, will need to lean on their bench depth to stay afloat during Kuminga’s absence. While the timeline for his return remains uncertain, the team will reevaluate his progress in three weeks.
