Jim Harbaugh‘s first season as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers may have ended in disappointment with a Wild Card Round loss, but his body now requires some crucial medical attention.

Harbaugh, who guided the Chargers to an 11-6 record and a playoff appearance, will undergo multiple medical procedures during the offseason to address ongoing health issues.

According to ESPN’s Kris Rhim, Harbaugh will have both a cardiac ablation and hip replacement surgery. These procedures come after a series of health-related incidents during the season.

Harbaugh, who has been seen with a noticeable limp, will undergo hip surgery to address the pain and mobility issues that have plagued him. In addition, the cardiac ablation is a necessary follow-up after a health scare in Week 6, when Harbaugh was forced to leave the Chargers‘ game against the Denver Broncos due to an atrial flutter.

Though paramedics treated him in the locker room, he returned to coach the rest of the game.

The cardiac procedure comes after Harbaugh consulted with a cardiologist for his irregular heartbeat, leading to him being placed on medication and wearing a heart monitor for two weeks.

This is not the first time Harbaugh has faced such health challenges. He previously dealt with arrhythmia and underwent a heart procedure in 2012 while coaching the San Francisco 49ers.

Chargers’ Playoff loss

Unfortunately, Harbaugh‘s medical issues came after the Chargers‘ season ended with a 32-12 loss to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round. Despite the defeat, the Chargers‘ 2024 season was seen as a success.

Harbaugh’s leadership helped the team secure their first playoff appearance since 2018, and their 11 victories were their most in a season since 2018. Though they were eliminated early, the Chargers’ postseason return marks a significant step forward under Harbaugh’s guidance.

Though the Chargers‘ playoff journey was short-lived, the team remains optimistic about the future. With Harbaugh‘s experience and the foundation laid during his first season, the Chargers will look to make improvements in the offseason and come back stronger next year.
