The New York Jets has decided that it will release Davante Adams on a free during the off-season, rather than trade him with another team.

Adams arrived at the Jets in 2024 to reunite with former Green Bay Packers teammate Aaron Rodgers, but the Jets are set to start the new season with neither player in their ranks.

There was a lot of excitement when the pairing arrived but the Jets got nowhere near the playoffs and now they will explore a new direction.

SportsKeeda’s Tony Pauline has reported that the Jets will let Adams go before free agency starts next week, even though they have been receiving calls from other teams to trade him.

Adams played 11 games for the Jets, making 67 catches for 854 yards and seven touchdowns.

The thinking behind letting Adams leave for free rather than trading him is presumably financial.

He is owed $72 million over the next two years of his contract, so a prospective trade partner would have likely wanted the Jets to pay a percentage of that outstanding figure while offering little in return.

Cutting Adams before June 1 saves the team $29.9 million against the cap with $8.4 million in dead money, while cutting him after June 1 will allow them to allocate $6.3 million of that dead money into next year, which would result in $36.2 million in savings and a dead cap hit of $2.1 million.

Departures for Rodgers and Adams

As for his current teammate, Good Morning Football on NFL Network’s Jamie Erdahl thinks that Rodgers could link up with Tom Brady and Pete Carroll at the Las Vegas Raiders for 2025, which would have been unthinkable in the past.

“I do think that there’s an evil laugh capability here in the AFC West that the Las Vegas Raiders could pull off between Brady pulling in Aaron,” Erdahl said. “I think there’s something happening with the Raiders where it could kind of come back with, ‘We’re just going to take it right down’.

“I don’t know what they would do with it after one year, but I really think there is something in the spirit of being petty and competitive. I think there’s something really entertaining that could happen,” she added.
