Mike McCarthy‘s Dallas Cowboys future is poised to be one of the biggest stories of the NFL offseason as the 61-year-old finds himself at risk of being dumped at the AT&T Stadium, so what is the strange motivation Jerry Jones may have to get rid?
America’s Team finished 7-10 and third in the NFC East, subsequently missing out on the playoffs, which is far from what the 82-year-old franchise owner expected after a major investment into contract extensions for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb.
And whilst more money is likely to continue flowing so they can retain the services of Micah Parsons and to potentially sign Tee Higgins, their Super Bowl-winning coach may not actually be around to use them next September.
News could come regarding his future as soon as Tuesday, January 14 which is when the exclusive negotiating rights end, and with the Chicago Bears reportedly interested then it could actually be a case of the head coach breaking up with Jones.
The radio silence on McCarthy’s future could be the loudest noise of the week by proving to him that he’s not actually the first-pick to retain his post in Arlington. Who could the billionaire, who is the owner, president and general manager, be looking to sign up?
According to Ed Werder, Jones might be more invested in the NFC Wild Card game than one would expect as he keeps a keen eye on the Philadelphia Eagles‘ offensive coordinator, Kellen Moore, fares against the Green Bay Packers.
The conditions are similar to the Cowboys’ disastrous 48-32 loss to the Packers at the same stage in 2023/24 so if Moore performs admirably then he might get the nod for the hotseat at the 80,000 AT&T Stadium in the heart of the Lone Star State.
