From the beginning of the year, it was evident that patience with Brian Daboll in New York would be limited, especially after disastrous 2023 and 2024 campaigns. Giants fans had lost nearly all the hope they regained in 2022, when the team reached the playoffs under Daniel Jones and even won a postseason game.
Many believed Daboll would be fired at the end of last season, but instead he was given one last chance: the 2025 season. During the Draft, the Giants made a bold move by selecting Jaxson Dart with the 25th overall pick after a trade with the Houston Texans. Prior to that, however, the team had already signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston.
The season turned out to be disastrous, and Daboll was ultimately fired after Week 10 following a loss to the Chicago Bears. Perhaps his biggest mistake was not committing to Dart from Week 1. In the first three games, he relied on Russell Wilson’s experience, but it didn’t work-except for the Week 2 game against the Dallas Cowboys. Against the Commanders and the Chiefs, Wilson struggled badly.
Jaxson Dart praises Malik Nabers
Once Jaxson Dart took over as the starting quarterback in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers, his impact was immediate, and a new sense of energy emerged among Giants fans. However, from that point on, he began to lose key offensive weapons that could have helped him have a stronger season. The most significant loss was Malik Nabers, the most talented player in the offense.
Against the Chargers, Nabers suffered a torn ACL in his right knee. Fans only got to see two completions from Dart to Nabers, totaling just 20 yards. Looking ahead, this duo could be spectacular, but that will have to wait until next season.
With three weeks remaining in the season, the Giants quarterback was asked about how difficult it has been to lose offensive stars like Malik Nabers. Dart was clear in his response, stating that it has been tough because, in his view, Nabers is the best wide receiver in the NFL: “You can’t replicate Malik. He’s the best receiver in the NFL, in my opinion,” said the former Ole Miss quarterback.
It remains to be seen how Malik Nabers returns from injury, but his talent is undeniable. Still, comparing him right now to the very best receivers in the NFL is difficult. This season’s receiving yardage leaders include Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Puka Nacua, George Pickens, and Ja’Marr Chase.
