When the New York Giants moved up in the 2025 NFL Draft to select Jaxson Dart at the end of the first round, they did it with a plan in mind. Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston were already on the roster, so the team could choose to bring Dart along slowly, let him learn behind the veterans and take over as the starter possibly in 2026.
Just one week into the 2025 regular season, that plan already seems to be advancing at an unforeseen rate. The Giants suffered a brutal division loss in Week 1, with Wilson putting together one of the worst QB performances around the league. That had some fans calling for head coach Brian Daboll to pull the plug on the Wilson experiment and hand Dart the reins. Daboll isn’t there just yet, but if Wilson continues to struggle, the head coach may have no choice.
How much longer will Brian Daboll stick with Russell Wilson?
Daboll is basically coaching for his job this season. If the team doesn’t show any improvement, he will be gone in the offseason or even before then. He needs at least adequate quarterback play from Wilson, but if he doesn’t get it, Dart will have his name called. And he’s ready for it.
While speaking to the media on Friday, Dart gave a diplomatic response when asked about the possibility of starting sooner rather than later. But he made it clear that he will be ready when Daboll needs him.
My job is just to be the best teammate to Russ. I don’t pay attention to that stuff… I’m just preparing for whatever chance I get. So there is not a specific game plan or something like that. It’s me just trying to be prepared and be ready whenever my number is called. I feel like I’ve said this, as a competitor: I don’t have a blast watching from the sideline. But it’s just the way that it is.
Dart impressed a ton during the preseason. He looked like a guy that was ready to start NFL games. It’s not much of a shock since he started 38 games over his last three college football seasons at Ole Miss. He’s ready for the moment; it’s up to Daboll to decide when that is.
