Golf is a sport that many athletes turn to in their downtime, from Michael Jordan and Stephen Curry to the Manning brothers. Even Travis Kelce, the tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, will make a golf-related appearance in Adam Sandler’s upcoming film Happy Gilmore 2. In addition, retired NFL star Jason Kelce has joined the ranks of athletes hitting the links, playing in a pro-am event leading up to the 2025 Truist Championship at the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course in Flourtown, Pennsylvania. Kelce, a Philadelphia Eagles legend, was paired with Irish golf star Shane Lowry for the nine-hole round, and their time together revealed a surprising bond that had fans buzzing.
A Halloween Costume Sparks Laughter on the Course
During their round, video captured a lighthearted moment between Jason Kelce and Shane Lowry that showed their instant chemistry. A woman filming for the PGA Tour asked Jason if he knew that Lowry had dressed up as his brother, Travis Kelce, for Halloween in 2024. After seeing a photo of Lowry wearing Travis’ No. 87 Chiefs jersey, white shorts and red socks, Jason exclaimed, “That’s so good!”
He then walked over to Lowry on the fairway, showed him the picture and jokingly asked, “Are you sure you’re not a Kelce?” While the physical resemblance isn’t striking, Lowry’s beard and burly build give off a Kelce-like vibe, adding to the humor.
Lowry explained that his daughter’s love for Taylor Swift – Travis’ girlfriend of nearly two years – inspired the costume. “My daughter is obsessed with Taylor, and she wanted to dress up for Halloween,” Lowry said. “So I ordered the shirt online and then went to Dick’s Sporting Goods to get the pads and everything.” It’s a costume choice Lowry never imagined would come full circle, as just months later he found himself playing golf with Jason, who called him his “long-lost brother.
Jason Kelce: A Fan Favorite On and Off the Field
Jason Kelce has a knack for winning over crowds wherever he goes, and his time at the Truist Championship was no exception. Just days before the event, Kelce took to Reddit to crowdsource tips for improving his golf game, posting, “Now that I’ve hung up the cleats, I’m trying to get serious about my golf game. I uploaded six different angles of my swing from a session yesterday. Looking for any tips you can give me-especially on my backswing and follow-through.”
His humility and dedication to fans underscore why he remains a beloved figure. Since retiring from the NFL in 2023 after a 13-year career with the Eagles, Kelce has stayed busy, joining ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown crew in 2024 and co-hosting the popular podcast New Heights with Travis, which ranked as the 8th most popular podcast on Apple Podcasts in 2024. On the field, Kelce was a seven-time Pro Bowler, a six-time First-Team All-Pro and a Super Bowl LII champion in 2018, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest centers in NFL history.
